Floods Recede in Bago Township but Some Villages Still Submerged

-

While floodwaters have started to recede in Bago Township following continuous rainfall since August 3, low-lying villages on the outskirts remain submerged, according to local relief workers.

By midday today, some of these low-lying villages are still flooded, with roads impassable to vehicles. However, residents expect that vehicles and motorcycles will be able to traverse the area by the afternoon, as reported on social media by Bago locals.

One relief worker mentioned that food aid continues to be delivered due to the ongoing flooding over the main roads in the low-lying areas.

“The water levels in the main town of Bago have receded, but the outer villages are still flooded. There are about five or six villages affected. Today, we are using boats to deliver supplies like rice and oil,” they said.

Following the flooding across the township, the main reservoir in Bago, Zonetoo Dam, was breached on July 30, which helped to lower water levels in some higher areas of the town.

Temporary shelters have been set up in at least 22 locations in monasteries and higher areas within Bago, accommodating no fewer than 700 flood victims each.

As the water levels recede in the higher areas of Bago, about half of the residents in these temporary shelters have been able to return home. However, those from the low-lying villages are still unable to return.

“Not everyone in Bago has been able to go back home. About half have returned, but the lower areas are still submerged. When I visited yesterday, water levels in the lower parts of town were up to my chest, and today it’s around waist level. Some have returned, but those in more difficult situations haven’t yet,” the relief worker added.

Currently, the main roads connecting Yangon and Bago, including the old Bago road, are clear and vehicles can pass smoothly.

Local sources report that during the week-long flooding in Bago, four people, including an eight-year-old child, have died.
