A 14-year-old girl was killed and thousands of residents have fled their homes due to artillery shelling by the military junta in Kyaikto Township, Mon State.
On June 14, artillery fire from Battalion 310 struck near a hut in Kyauk Hat Kwin, killing 14-year-old Ma Nandar Lin and injuring 1.5-year-old Ma Shwe Zin Lay, according to a statement from the Karen National Union (KNU).
On the evening of June 21, the military again shelled areas under KNU control in Kyaikto, with one shell landing in the compound of Chaung Gyi Monastery in Kyaikto Township. The explosion injured the abbot, U Zinn, 75-year-old U San Tin, and 62-year-old Daw San Myint, the KNU reported.
The continuous shelling has caused significant damage to homes and other properties. Due to the daily artillery attacks, many residents have been forced to abandon their homes and seek refuge elsewhere.
The KNU states that over 10,000 people have become internally displaced within the KNU-controlled areas of Kyaikto Township due to the ongoing military junta offensives.
