Two residents from Dankhuntai village, Innpyoung village tract, Paung Township, Mon State, have been detained for 12 days under accusations of supporting the People’s Defense Force (PDF).
U Kyar Nyo, a 60-year-old former village administrator, and his son were called to Paung Town police station on June 14, where they were both arrested and have not been released since.
A family member close to the situation said, “No charges have been filed yet, they are still under investigation. It has been over a week since they were detained. We heard that they were accused of financially supporting the PDF. The military junta called him and he went, only to be arrested immediately and not released.”
There have been ongoing arrests of locals suspected of connections with the PDF based on information obtained from previous detainees by the Paung Township Military Intelligence.
“The military junta is acting on information from previously detained individuals. They already have lists of people suspected of supporting the PDF,” a source close to the military junta said.
The two men are currently held at Paung Town police station, according to sources close to the police.
Additionally, U Kyar Nyo and his son are being prepared for charges under sections 50 (J) and 52 (A) of the Counter-Terrorism Law, accusing them of financially supporting the PDF, according to sources close to the military junta.
U Kyar Nyo, the former Dankhuntai village administrator, served under the previous civilian government and has been working in agriculture since the military coup.
Since the military coup over three and a half years ago, over a hundred residents from Paung have been arrested and sentenced under similar accusations of supporting the PDF. Many have faced imprisonment and house arrest.
