The Myanmar Petroleum Importers and Distributors Association issued a statement on June 12, instructing gas stations that they be contacted in a timely manner in the event of a power outage.
The Petroleum Products Inspection Department followed up on the announcement saying they will take appropriate action against petrol stations that fail to do so.
These announcements come at a time when there are growing fears of a shortage of fuel.
A petrol station operator says the Myanmar Petroleum Importers and Distributors Association must “make it easier and more convenient to buy fuel.” The operator suggested that petrol companies are negotiating for a limited supply, in order to justify more price hikes for gasoline.
An official at one petrol station in Mawlamyine said, “We are selling what we have as much as we can, but if there is a shortage, we will take action.”
Zaw Min Tun, head of the State Administrative Council’s press team said on June 1,
that there will be no shortage of fuel, but reserve fuels will remain in storage tanks until June 16.
