Second bomb blast rocks Mon State

-

By Arka:

A second bomb exploded in Mon State on yesterday night, May 6th. The explosive detonated at 9 pm in a police station in Thanphyuzayart town’s Aungzayya quarter.

A Thanphyuzayart town resident who viewed the site of the blast this morning reported to IMNA that no injuries were sustained, as the explosion occurred at night, when the majority of the town’s citizens had already retired for the night.

The late hour of the explosion also accounts for the fact that the crime was not investigated by town residents until this morning.

“It was at night, and nobody dared to go out and see the explosion site. The explosion was very loud. We went to see it [the site] at dawn,” he explained.

3 government workers were injured when a bomb exploded at a government telecommunications center last week in Mon State’s Kyaikmayaw Township. The case remains unsolved; the New Mon State Party (NMSP) went on record in IMNA’s coverage of the blast, on April 29th, in order to deny responsibility for the crime.

A second Aungzayya quarter resident, who lives near the police station in question, reported to IMNA that 10 days before the blast, Thanphyuzayart town policemen tightened security within the town significantly.

On April 30th of this year, IMNA reported on a series of bomb security meeting held in various locations across Mon State; one such meeting was held in Thanphyuzayart town, and led by Infantry Battalion (IB) No. 62. Village headmen from across the state attended the meetings, where they were informed that they were required to assume responsibility for implementing security measures their villages, to prevent explosions from occurring.

Unfortunately, the checkpoints and motorbike searches that IMNA’s second source from Thanphyuzayart town cites seemed to have failed.

“They checked the people starting at 6 pm every night, especially the motorbike drivers, and they opened up the motorbike seats. Especially near the police station,” he reported

This explosion is one of a string of bomb blasts that have occurred across the country of Burma since the commencement of the year 2010, resulting in numerous casualties and hundreds of injuries.
