Two individuals, a monk and a woman were detained after marijuana [cannabis] was found in their possession near the Kyaikhtiyo Pagoda compound in Kyaikhto Township, Mon State.
Authorities received information regarding illegal drugs in the area and sought to arrest suspects. “We arrested and charged two [individuals]. We will proceed [with] further investigations regarding the case,” said Police Chief Zin Zaw Oo, from the police station in Kin-Mann-Chaung area.
According to the police report, U Binya Wontha and a woman were detained. The authorities initially tried to ask U Binya Wontha questions but he attempted to run away. The officers pursued and arrested him.

A police search of his room at the Ko-Na-Win Monastery revealed 40,825 kyats and 81.65 grams of marijuana leaves and stems hidden inside packets of chips. Police also found 571.55 grams of marijuana and 285,775 kyats hidden in a betel nut box beside the bed.
U Binya Wontha and Ma Naw Zar Khine were charged under Section 19 (a)/21 of the Narcotics and Psychotropic Substances Law for illegal drug possession by the Kin-Mann-Chaung area police.
