Depression off Mon-Tanintharyi coast placed on red alert

-

A depression off the Mon-Tanintharyi coast has been placed on red alert as it could cross Myanmar near the Gulf of Mottama, according to the Department of Meteorology and Hydrology.

The department said the depression is strengthening and has been classified at the red alert level because it is expected to cross the coast near the Gulf of Mottama.

The system is forecast to intensify into a deep depression within the next 48 hours and cross the coast between Thongwa Township in Yangon Region and Kyaikto Township in Mon State before moving through Bago and Magway regions.

Residents in the Ayeyarwady Delta and along the Gulf of Mottama coast have been advised to take precautions against possible natural disasters, including heavy rainfall, sudden landslides and flooding.

Meanwhile, continuous rainfall linked to the current low-pressure system has affected the Dawei area in Tanintharyi Region since September 24. Flooding and landslides have been reported in Dawei, Launglon and Thayetchaung townships, killing 13 people and leaving more than 30 missing.

Following a storm warning issued by the Department of Meteorology and Hydrology on the afternoon of September 28, social assistance groups, fire services and some local residents in Mon State have begun making preparations.
