Husband and Wife Arrested in Thanbyuzayat Over Alleged Reports to Resistance Groups

-

A husband and wife living in Weawinkarar Village, Thanbyuzayat Township, Mon State, were arrested by the military junta on allegations of providing information to revolutionary forces, according to local residents.

The couple, 31-year-old Aung Myint Mo Htet, (Aka) Maung Phyu, and his wife, Ma Phyu Phyu Aung, (Aka) Ma Phyu, were arrested at around noon on September 4 while they were working as rubber tappers, according to residents.

“They were arrested because they were reportedly providing information to revolutionary groups about the movements and activities of the military,” a local resident said.

The couple are migrant workers who reportedly work as rubber tappers at rubber plantations in the Peinhnetaw Village area.

According to people close to the police, the couple were arrested for allegedly providing information about the movements of military columns in Thanbyuzayat Township to the KNLA/PDF and for failing to report to the authorities despite knowing about the activities of KNLA/PDF groups.

The couple are currently being prosecuted under Section 52(a) of the Counter-Terrorism Law at Thanbyuzayat Police Station, according to sources.

The military junta has continued to arrest local residents in Mon State, including Thanbyuzayat, on allegations of links to revolutionary forces. Those arrested are often sentenced to lengthy prison terms.

In August, three civilians were also arrested by the military junta and prosecuted under the Counter-Terrorism Law for allegedly posting comments on the social media pages of revolutionary groups.
