Residents living near a creek in Kyaung Ywar village, Ye Township, Mon State, have begun moving to higher ground as flooding hit the area on August 20, according to local residents.
The creek in Kyaung Ywar rose to more than 8 feet by the evening of August 20 and could rise further as heavy rain continues, residents said.
Residents living near the creek began emergency evacuations on August 20 because of the rising water levels.
“You can no longer travel from Kyaung Ywar to other villages, and people from other villages cannot come here either. Water has already entered the Kyaung Ywar ward. Some people are moving out. The creek kept rising and had already exceeded 8 feet by the evening. Since the rain is continuing, the water level is likely to rise further,” a Kyaung Ywar resident said.
A resident also said motorcycles and cars could no longer pass through flooded sections of the road because of the strong water currents.
Residents said people displaced by airstrikes and currently staying in Kyaung Ywar may also have to move again because of the flooding.
Heavy rain has continued for two consecutive days across most townships in southern Mon State. Low-lying areas have experienced flooding since the afternoon of August 20, according to local residents.
