Heavy rain for two consecutive days has caused flooding on roads across several townships in southern Mon State, making travel difficult since the afternoon of Aug. 20, according to local residents.
Roads in Mawlamyine, Paung, Mudon and Ye townships, including sections of National Road No. 8, have been flooded. Strong currents have made it difficult for vehicles and motorcycles to pass, residents said.
A Mawlamyine resident said water began rising in the city around noon as heavy rain continued without a break.
“The water started rising around noon. It has been raining continuously without stopping. Since the streams are already full, the rainwater is flowing onto the roads. People traveling toward Phet Khing have had to take alternative routes by motorcycle,” the resident said.
In Paung Township, streams are also filled with runoff from the surrounding hills, with water rising to about 6 inches above some roads.
As heavy rain continues, social welfare groups have urged residents who need to evacuate to contact nearby emergency rescue teams for assistance.
Township fire services and joint social rescue teams are also helping direct traffic and clear routes in areas where roads have been flooded, according to local sources.
The Department of Meteorology and Hydrology has warned that heavy rain could bring strong winds, flash floods and landslides. Residents near elevated areas have been urged to remain alert to landslide risks, while those living near small rivers and streams have been warned of possible flooding.
