A 59-year-old woman who recently returned from Yangon has tested positive for cholera in Kyaikkhami, Thanbyuzayat Township, Mon State, and is being monitored, according to a source close to the township health department.
The woman, who lives on Shwe Kyin Kyaung Road in Yan Aung Myin Ward, Kyaikkhami, returned to the town from Yangon on August 9 with her 40-year-old niece. She subsequently developed diarrhea.
“She was suffering from frequent diarrhea at around 7:30 p.m. on August 13 and received treatment at Kyaikkhami Station Hospital. Doctors at the station hospital tested her and found that she was positive for cholera,” a source close to the township health department said.
The woman was treated at Kyaikkhami Station Hospital and her health condition has since improved, the source said.
Two male and seven female family members who had contact with the woman have also been placed in quarantine at Kyaikkhami Station Hospital for monitoring, according to the source.
Cholera outbreaks have been reported in several townships in Yangon Region since August 9. More than 180 patients had been admitted to Yangon General Hospital by August 13, while one 92-year-old patient had died and 54 patients had tested positive for cholera, according to available information.
Authorities in Yangon Region are currently conducting laboratory tests on food and water in cooperation with relevant departments in Lanmadaw, Latha, Pabedan and Kyauktada townships.
Street food vendors in the affected areas have also been prohibited from operating since August 13, according to the information.
