Brigadier General Aung Win Than Appointed as Mon State Chief Minister

-

Brigadier General Aung Win Than, a military representative, has been officially approved and appointed as the Chief Minister of the new Mon State government.

The appointment was confirmed on April 6th during the fifth day of the first regular session of the third Mon State Hluttaw (parliament).

The Mon State Hluttaw approved the nomination without objection, following the submission of the candidate list for Chief Minister by Senior General Min Aung Hlaing, the military leader who currently serves as president.

Brigadier General Aung Win Than, now appointed as Chief Minister, previously served up to the position of Assistant Chief of Military Training and has received military honors awarded by the commander-in-chief. He is currently serving in the Myanmar Navy.

It is also reported that Brigadier General Aung Win Than is considered a trusted figure of Senior General Min Aung Hlaing, who led the military coup.

Currently, U Aung Kyi Thein of the Union Solidarity and Development Party (USDP) holds the position of Mon State Chief Minister. With the new appointment of Brigadier General Aung Win Than, U Aung Kyi Thein will have to step down from the post.

In the Mon State Hluttaw, there are a total of 31 seats: 11 representatives from the USDP, 8 military representatives, 7 from the Mon Unity Party, and one representative each from the National Unity and Development Party, Pa-O National Development Party, People’s Party, People’s Pioneer Party, and National Development Party.

The first regular session of the third Mon State Hluttaw began on March 30.
