Petrol Reference Prices Higher in Mon State than other Regions

-

Petrol reference prices set by the Myanmar Military Junta in Mon State are higher than in other regions and states, with petrol about 500 kyats per liter and diesel nearly 1,000 kyats more expensive, according to retailers.

On March 13, the junta’s petrol import, storage, and distribution supervisory committee set reference prices in Mon State at 3,330 kyats per liter for 92 octane, 3,470 kyats for 95 octane, 4,185 kyats for regular diesel, and 4,225 kyats for premium diesel.

A petrol business operator in Mawlamyine said prices are higher due to transportation costs, as large tankers cannot dock at ports in Mudon Township, requiring transfer by smaller vessels.

“Prices change weekly depending on the situation. Increases are partly due to transportation costs because petrol has to be carried by smaller boats,” he said.

On the previous day, prices in Mawlamyine were set at 2,875 kyats per liter for 92 octane and 2,955 kyats for 95 octane.

Due to shortages, petrol prices at small shops have reached around 8,000 kyats per liter. A resident from Kyaikmaraw Township said further increases in reference prices could push market prices higher.

“Prices vary between shops, but petrol stations charge around 8,000 kyats on average. Supply is limited, but we have to buy it when needed. Some buy petrol from Mawlamyine and resell it in villages, while many large stations remain closed,” the resident said.

Residents in Paung Township said many major petrol stations have faced shortages due to a 60 percent reduction in quotas, with some stations closing for about four days.

Residents said they are facing difficulties purchasing petrol due to shortages and high prices, and called for action to stabilize prices as Mon State’s reference rates remain higher than other regions.

Global oil prices have also fluctuated due to conflicts in the Middle East, affecting fuel pricing in many countries.
