“Dawei people have long drifted along the main currents of national politics without having a political direction of their own. Living under imposed systems has been a continuous reality in Dawei political history. From this meeting, everyone strongly expressed the desire to build a national politics that is moderate, civilized, and guided by knowledge.” — Ko Yona Than, spokesperson of the Tavoyan National Federation (TNF)

The Tavoyan National Federation (TNF) announced on March 10 that four local revolutionary armed groups have united under its political guidance to form a single force called the Dawei Army.

The Dawei National Political Conference was held from February 28 to March 3, 2026, with participation from civil society organizations, political groups, humanitarian organizations, and representatives from Dawei armed groups. Historically, Dawei has lacked independent political leadership, often following broader national politics under imposed systems.

Following the conference, in response to the revolutionary awareness, voices, and aspirations of the people, the Tavoyan National Federation was formed, and under its guidance, the Dawei Army was established to carry out the armed struggle, Ko Yona Than told IMNA.

Question: First, could you explain how the Dawei Army was formed alongside the Tavoyan National Federation?

Answer: Back in August 2025, for the first time, different revolutionary groups in Dawei got together along with people working in education, healthcare, and humanitarian aid. We sat down and talked openly about the situation. The main question was whether Dawei should have its own political leadership, and how we could plan for the long-term. Historically, Dawei didn’t really have its own political direction and mostly followed national politics, often under systems imposed on us. From these conversations, everyone agreed that what we need is a moderate, knowledge-based, and civilized approach to national politics—nothing extreme. That discussion laid the groundwork for the March 2026 national conference, where the Tavoyan National Federation was formed and the Dawei Army was created under its leadership.

Question: What political and military positions will the Tavoyan National Federation adopt?

Answer: We’re focusing on three main things. First, building a federal system that guarantees Dawei self-determination. Second, promoting freedom, justice, and peaceful coexistence. Third, creating a socio-economic system that respects Dawei identity and knowledge. Those are the political principles that guide us. On the military side, the Dawei Army will be trained and organized so that it’s disciplined and effective. At the same time, we’ll work together with allies both inside and outside the region to push the revolutionary movement forward.

Question: How will you invite other revolutionary groups that haven’t joined yet?

Answer: We’ve already started informal talks with other groups in the region. Soon, we’ll hold formal meetings with both armed and non-armed groups, as well as individuals who share the same goals. The idea is to build trust and cooperation so we can work together more effectively.

Question: What advantages does the formation of the Dawei Army bring to the revolutionary movement?

Answer: Before, these four armed groups were operating independently. Now, under a single flag, one command, and one symbol, we can coordinate our actions better and be much more effective on the ground. It also marks the beginning of uniting other revolutionary forces that are scattered across the region.

Question: People in the Dawei region are facing increasing violence and rights violations. How will the Tavoyan National Federation protect them?

Answer: Our top priority is the safety and rights of the people. Politically, we stand with civilians and will push for justice if rights are violated. Militarily, we’re focusing on training and organizing the Dawei Army properly so we can defend the population and respond quickly when threats arise. Discipline and structured preparation are key—it helps us protect people effectively when they need it most.

Question: Why is the Dawei region facing particularly intense violence from the junta?

Answer: Over the past few months, attacks by the junta have increased. This is likely because revolutionary forces in the area are becoming more active, and the junta wants to maintain control. Dawei is strategically important politically, militarily, and economically. Whenever revolutionary forces make gains, the junta reacts with heavy-handed force, sometimes targeting civilians as well. The main reason is simple—they want to hold onto power and make sure their control continues.
