Fuel Distribution by Ships Begins Near Lighthouse on Kyaikkhami Beach

-

Fuel distribution operations using large ships have begun near the lighthouse on the beach of Kyaikkhami town, Thanbyuzayat township, Mon State, according to confirmation from local residents.

Previously, fuel brought in by foreign vessels was transferred to smaller boats and distributed at the Puma International Port Terminal in Katonepaw village, Mudon township. However, the military junta announced that from December 12, 2025 until May 18, 2026, the area near the lighthouse on Kyaikkhami beach would be used as a temporary international fuel offloading port.

Since early January, fuel has been transferred by small boats from the lighthouse area in Kyaikkhami and transported onward to the Puma International Port Terminal in Katonepaw village, locals said.

“That area is on the edge of town and closer to the sea. Being near the lighthouse makes navigation easier,” said a resident living near the beach. “Right now, fuel ships are coming and going. When a large fuel tanker arrives, it anchors offshore and smaller boats transport the fuel. Fuel for the Katonepaw port is being taken from here.”

Local residents expressed concern that carrying out fuel distribution so close to the coastline could lead to marine pollution and fuel leaks.

Fishermen warned that any accidents during fuel transfer could result in oil spills, damaging fishing activities and marine resources.

Kyaikkhami beach is a vital area for local livelihoods, including fishing and tourism. Residents said environmental damage caused by fuel offloading operations could negatively impact the community.

“Because fuel is being offloaded so close to the shore, even a small spill could affect seawater and fishing,” said a local fisherman. “This area is directly linked to everyone’s livelihood, so environmental protection needs to be taken seriously.”

Residents are calling for stricter environmental safeguards and for authorities to clearly inform the public about emergency response plans in case of accidents.

The military junta has designated the temporary international fuel port at a location offshore near Kyaikkhami town at latitude 16°03.051′ North and longitude 97°31.187′ East.

Mon State has frequently experienced fuel shortages due to irregular distribution systems, with fuel prices reportedly higher than in other regions and states.
