Eleven people who had been arrested under Section 505(a) were released this afternoon from Kyaikmaraw and Thaton prisons in Mon State. The group includes four male prisoners and two female prisoners from Kyaikmaraw Prison, and five male prisoners from Thaton Prison, according to sources.
On November 26, the military junta announced that more than 2,300 political prisoners arrested under Section 505(a) were granted amnesty, and charges against over 5,500 others were dropped, claiming it was to allow them to vote in the upcoming election.
Court-related sources said that those still being held inside prisons under ongoing 505(a) trials were only released in the afternoon because they had to wait for official case-closure documents and court release orders.
