Junta Regains Control of Thingan Nyi Naung on Myawaddy–Kawkareik Asian Highway with Support from Karen BGF

-

The military junta, with assistance from the Karen Border Guard Force (BGF), has regained control of Thingan Nyi Naung, located along the Myawaddy–Kawkareik Asian Highway in Karen State, on September 6, according to local sources.

The junta first captured the Kyone Doh–Kawkareik road section on July 24. Since then, it has launched continuous operations to retake the remaining stretch of the highway, particularly the Kawkareik–Thingan Nyi Naung–Myawaddy section, beginning on August 28.

To achieve this, the junta’s Aung Zeya Military Column advanced from Kawkareik, while troops from Infantry Battalion 275, which guards Myawaddy, began attacks on September 1. Fighting then intensified near Kwin Kalay Village in Myawaddy Township.

A frontline source confirmed that the junta conducted its offensive with direct support from the Karen BGF, a local armed group allied with the military. With combined ground assaults, drone strikes, and air attacks, the junta’s Aung Zeya Column succeeded in retaking control of the Thingan Nyi Naung area on September 6.

Due to the heavy attacks, forces from the Karen National Liberation Army (KNLA) and the People’s Defense Forces (PDFs) were forced to withdraw from the area.

At present, the junta is carrying out security operations along the Kawkareik–Thingan Nyi Naung–Myawaddy section of the Asian Highway. Reports indicate the junta also plans to reopen the road for public use in the coming days.
