The Karen National Union (KNU) has reaffirmed its unwavering commitment to preventing sexual violence and eliminating gender-based discrimination across all its political and military structures.
According to a statement released on September 1st, the KNU pledged to strictly prohibit all forms of sexual violence within its areas of administration and to continue striving toward the elimination of gender discrimination.
Padoh Saw Taw Nee, spokesperson of the KNU, said that the organization aims to build a society where every Karen man and woman can live equally, and where no one suffers in silence as a victim of violence. He called on the public to participate in this effort.

“On the issue of gender equality, especially women’s leadership, we all have responsibilities, and we are already working on it. Everyone involved, from our armed forces to our administrative members—senior to junior—needs to know this and take part. That is why we have issued this reaffirmation,” he said.
He also added that the KNU is currently drafting and implementing a gender policy to strengthen women’s leadership roles.
In July 2013, the KNU signed a formal deed of commitment with the Geneva Call, pledging to prohibit sexual violence and eliminate gender discrimination. The organization has since reiterated its determination to uphold this commitment without retreat to the Karen people.
The provisions of the deed have been communicated not only to the Karen public but also to KNU leaders, officers, and soldiers, with instructions to respect and comply with them in their work. The statement warned that violations would not be tolerated and that perpetrators would face accountability in line with international standards.

“Agreements are not just papers signed and forgotten. The key is personally adhering to and implementing what we have committed to. This is not something new—we made this pledge 12 years ago and must continue to act on it regarding gender equality and non-discrimination,” Padoh Saw Taw Nee explained.
On September 1st, the KNU also held a press briefing at a location along the Thai–Kawthoolei border, reaffirming its commitments to preventing sexual violence and eliminating gender-based discrimination.
Despite ongoing conflict, the KNU stated it remains steadfast in its responsibilities to promote gender equality and to work toward the emergence of a just and inclusive society.
