Malaria Cases Decline in New Mon State Party-Controlled Areas

-

Malaria infections have declined in New Mon State Party-controlled areas, including Yechaungpyar, Yebyu and Kyainseilgyi Townships.

According to data from the Mon National Healthcare Committee (MNHC), The highest number of cases in 2025 was recorded in May, with 840 patients testing positive within a single month.

The infection rate has decreased since July, with only 242 confirmed cases. Preliminary data suggest that infections in August have remained at a very low level, an MNHC official said.

“Malaria transmission is seasonal. Cases usually peak from May to July and then again in October and November. In August, the numbers generally drop,” said an MNHC official from the Health Surveillance and Evaluation Team.

However, because malaria transmission can rise in the latter part of the rainy season, residents are encouraged to remain vigilant.

From January to July this year, a total of 2,857 malaria cases were reported in NMSP-controlled territories, with the majority caused by Plasmodium Vivax (P.V).

More serious Plasmodium falciparum (P. falciparum) type infections remain present in Yae Chaung Phya.  This  poses significant risks for children under five, pregnant women, and those with no prior malaria exposure.

“P.F. is more dangerous. It is targeted for elimination by 2026, but in reality, complete eradication seems unlikely at this stage. The cases are fewer now, but the threat remains,” the MNHC official added.

To reduce the risk of infections, residents are advised to maintain clean surroundings and use mosquito nets when sleeping.

While the MNHC had been able to provide mosquito nets, medicines, and repellents in previous years, international aid shortages this year have hampered prevention and treatment efforts.

In 2024, a total of 4,156 malaria cases were reported in NMSP-controlled areas, with the highest prevalence also occurring between May and July.
