Civilian Killed, Five Injured in Military Junta Attack in Kyaikto

-

One civilian was killed and five others were injured after the military junta launched airstrikes and fired heavy weapons and small arms in Kyaikto Township, Mon State, according to reports.

The Karen National Union (KNU) stated that junta forces deliberately targeted civilian areas, carrying out airstrikes on villages and shelling with mortars and other weapons.

On August 9, junta aircraft bombed Peinhnekone village in the Pyinkatoekone village tract, even though no clashes had occurred in the area. The attack killed one resident, injured five others, and destroyed five houses, three cars, and three motorcycles.

Similarly, on August 11, without any fighting taking place, junta forces from Light Infantry Division (44) fired a 120 mm mortar into Winthaung village, located between Winthaung and Kyaukpon villages in the Kyauklonegyi village tract. The shell landed in civilian work areas.

That same evening, a combined force of junta troops from Infantry Battalion (8) and Light Infantry Battalions (3) entered Chaungpyan village and opened fire with small arms, injuring a 50-year-old resident named Naw Pan Kyi, who is now receiving medical treatment, the KNU added.
