Around 40 People, Including IDPs, Arrested in Theinzayat, Kyaikto Township

-

Around 40 people, including internally displaced persons (IDPs), were arrested in Theinzayat town, Kyaikto Township, Mon State, according to local sources.

On the morning of August 8, at around 10 a.m., more than 20 military junta soldiers and police officers raided the office of the “Loya Pyae Social Assistance Association” in Theinzayat, where IDPs had sought shelter. They arrested 15 men, reportedly from villages including Kun Seik, Nyaung Chay Htauk, Win Kan, and Shan Su.

Later that afternoon, junta forces also detained more than 20 other men and women from the streets of Theinzayat, residents said.

Those arrested are currently being held at Theinzayat Police Station and the headquarters of the junta’s Infantry Battalion No. 207 in Theinzayat. Family members have not been allowed to meet with the detainees, according to relatives and people close to them.

Just days earlier, on July 30, security forces,  including junta troops, police, and Pyu Saw Htee militia members, carried out a large-scale raid in Puteinyoe village, Thaton Township, arresting more than 40 men, including local youths.

While some of those detained in the July 30 operation were released in early August, the majority remain in custody, locals said.
