Military Junta Pushes to Expand Mobile Security Forces in Mon State

-

The military junta is making efforts to reorganize and expand Public Security and Counter-Terrorism (Mobile) forces in several townships across Mon State. According to sources, township and village administrators have been ordered to recruit new members to support this expansion.

Following the announcement of a central oversight committee for Public Security and Counter-Terrorism on August 16, 2024, the military junta began establishing township-level security units of around 50 members in states and regions across the country.

In July 2025, the junta instructed administrators in Mon State to recruit an additional 50 individuals per township under a new designation: Public Security and Counter-Terrorism (Mobile) Forces.

ā€œLast year, they [the military junta] formed urban security units under the same title in every township. Now they’re forming mobile units and ordering township administrators to find 50 people per township — no exceptions,ā€ a local source told IMNA.

The new recruits are expected to undergo basic military training and assist with supporting military columns and local security patrols operating in their respective townships.

Previously, the junta’s urban security units were stationed at checkpoints, government office compounds, and guest registration inspections.

ā€œLast year, they were able to fill those positions by hiring people from anywhere they could. But now it’s much harder to recruit. There’s no one left to hire. The military is pushing for quick recruitment, and many administrators are feeling overwhelmed — some are even considering resignation,ā€ another source told IMNA.

In addition to the ongoing illegal conscription of youths aged 18 to 35 under the so-called military service law, the military junta is now also targeting civilians between the ages of 35 and 65 for recruitment into these new mobile security forces.
