KNU Reclaims Thikapalel Camp after 28 Years of Loss

-

The Karen National Union (KNU) announced today, June 23, that it has regained control of the Thikapalel camp, which has been lost for 28 years on the Thai-Myanmar border in Kawkareik Township, Karen State.

The Thikapalel camp, which the military junta’s troops had occupied, was recaptured on June 22 by a joint force consisting of the Karen National Defence Organisation (KNDO) and the People’s Defence Forces (PDF).

After the KNU withdrew from its Manerplaw headquarters, it relocated and established the Thikapalel camp as its new headquarters around May 1995. However, before two years had passed, in February 1997, the military launched another offensive and seized control of the camp

Currently, the joint KNU forces have been attacking and capturing military junta camps along the Thai-Myanmar border one after another, and it is reported that only a few camps remain under military control.
