COVID-19 Vaccination Continues, but Some Remain Out of Reach

-

Since the return of COVID-19 cases in Mon State, the military junta’s Ministry of Health has accelerated the administration of COVID-19 vaccines and booster shots. However, it is reported that some people remain out of reach.

In Kyaikto Township, on June 9th, a man who had relocated from Yangon to Kyaikto was found to be infected with COVID-19. Additionally, a new patient was detected on the morning of June 15th.

Beginning on June 12th, township health departments administered COVID-19 vaccines and booster shots at public hospitals in Chaungzone, Kyaikto, and Ye town. However, due to unsafe travel conditions and the inspection and detention of unlicensed vehicles, rural residents face difficulties getting vaccinated.

“They are arresting vehicles without licenses and increasing inspections. All the village cars are parked and not going anywhere. The rental prices are so expensive. It’s far to get to town. Travelling is unsafe, so people don’t go,” said a resident of Kyaikto Township.

Since the military coup, most locals in Kyaikto have not been able to receive full doses of the COVID-19 vaccine, raising fears of a resurgence of infections. Especially in areas controlled by resistance groups, and/or where locals lack access to information about COVID-19 vaccines and other health services.

A resident of Ye said, “Before the coup, villages were informed in advance about vaccination. Now, there is no information at all. I think only people in town are getting vaccinated, not the villagers.”

Although the military junta’s Ministry of Health frequently urges people to get booster shots because COVID-19 infection can lead to severe illness and high mortality, most rural residents have been unable to access vaccines and boosters since 2022 due to poor transportation.

Health experts warn that those who have not completed full COVID-19 vaccination are at higher risk of infection, more severe symptoms, and long-term health problems after infection.
