Resistance forces launched a surprise attack on a military junta convoy heading to reinforce the Thaybawboe near the Thai-Myanmar border in Karen State, according to local sources.
On the morning of May 28, a junta column of over 70 troops was en route to bolster the Thaybawboe outpost when it was ambushed near Son See Myaing, close to the headquarters of the Democratic Karen Buddhist Army (DKBA). The assault was led by joint resistance forces under the command of the Karen National Liberation Army (KNLA).
A source close to the resistance said several junta soldiers were killed during the attack, over 30 were captured, and some fled across the border into Thailand.

“The entire column was neutralized. We captured around 30 troops. Some were killed, and others managed to escape into Thailand. The Thaybawboe base will likely fall soon. The junta forces were trying to approach from both DKBA-controlled areas and the Thai side,” the source said.
Resistance forces have been actively targeting junta bases and outposts in the Thaybawboe region, aiming to seize control of key military positions, including those atop Thaybawboe village.
Since operations began on May 27, thousands of civilians from areas including Wawlay, Thaybawboe, and Sonseemyaing have fled their homes to escape the fighting. Some have crossed into Thailand seeking refuge.
Earlier, on the afternoon of May 23, KNLA-led forces successfully overran the junta’s Bler Doh base near Thaybawboe, according to a statement released by the Karen National Union (KNU) on the same day.
