Seasonal flu infections are on the rise across Mon State, particularly during the early monsoon period, according to reports from local residents.
Since early May, which marks the transition from the hot season to the rainy season, health facilities have seen a noticeable increase in flu cases. The seasonal flu is spreading widely among both children and adults, but elderly individuals and young children with weaker immune systems are experiencing more severe symptoms.

“There are many people sick right now almost every household has someone down with the flu. It’s probably due to the seasonal shift. Among children, there are also cases of dengue fever, while adults often suffer from flu symptoms like a runny nose, cough, and fever,” said a resident of Mawlamyine.
Health officials confirm that seasonal flu is a viral infection transmitted through respiratory droplets. Common symptoms include fever, sneezing, sore throat, headaches, runny nose, coughing, body aches, and loss of appetite.
In addition to the seasonal flu, residents have also reported increasing cases of dengue fever, a mosquito-borne illness that typically spikes during the rainy season.
“With the rainy season setting in, parents have to be extra cautious. When a child has a fever, we start worrying whether it’s just a common flu or dengue. Right now, both adults and children are falling ill. We really can’t afford to take any chances,” said a concerned mother.
Health authorities are urging the public to seek early treatment at nearby hospitals or clinics if symptoms develop during this seasonal transition. They are also warning about other seasonal illnesses such as acute diarrhea, which can spread more easily during the rainy months.
If not treated promptly, these diseases—especially dengue and severe flu—can lead to serious complications or even death, the health department has warned.
