NLD Urges International Action Against Junta for Targeting Civilians

-

The National League for Democracy (NLD) has called on the United Nations, ASEAN, and the broader international community to take urgent action against Myanmar’s military junta for repeatedly violating ceasefire agreements and committing war crimes, including systematic attacks on civilians.

In a statement released on May 15, the NLD condemned the junta for launching airstrikes, artillery attacks, arson, and torture of political prisoners—despite the junta’s earlier announcement of a ceasefire following the April 2 earthquake.

According to data compiled by the NLD’s Human Rights Documentation Team (HRDT-NLD), the junta carried out 181 airstrikes across 11 states and regions between April 3 and May 13. These strikes killed 182 people, including 34 children under 18, and injured 298 others, 76 of whom were also minors.

The worst incident reportedly occurred on May 12 in Ohtein village, western Depayin Township, Sagaing Region, where an airstrike on a local school killed two female teachers and 22 students.

Another deadly attack was reported in Tun Ywar Wai old village, Rathedaung Township, Rakhine State, where a 500-pound bomb killed 13 local residents.

The NLD also documented 15 artillery attacks across five states and regions during the same period, resulting in 14 civilian deaths and 43 injuries, including 8 children.

In addition to aerial and artillery assaults, the junta’s ground forces have been accused of burning homes, executing civilians, and destroying property during raids on villages. Between April 3 and May 13, 169 civilians, including 36 children under the age of 18, were reportedly killed in such operations. Among the dead was a seven-month-old infant.

The junta also carried out eight mass killings, each involving more than five victims. One of the most egregious cases occurred on May 12 in Laema village, Gangaw Township, Magway Region, where junta troops killed 11 villagers and abducted eight others.

Despite declaring a ceasefire on April 2 in the wake of the earthquake, the junta, led by Senior General Min Aung Hlaing, has continued its military offensives and human rights violations. The NLD emphasized that these acts constitute crimes against humanity and war crimes, and called for coordinated international efforts to hold the junta accountable.
