Over 8,800 Civilians Displaced by Junta Attacks in Kyaikto Township

-

More than 8,800 civilians have been forced to flee their homes in Kyaikto Township, Mon State, due to continued airstrikes and artillery shelling by junta forces targeting residential areas, according to a statement released by the Karen National Union (KNU).

From April 28 to May 6, junta forces carried out air raids using fighter jets and launched artillery attacks on villages across Kyaikto and neighboring Thaton townships.

Military battalions based in the area—including Infantry Battalion 207, Artillery Battalion 310, Infantry Battalion 206, and Artillery Battalion 402—have reportedly shelled civilian areas with 60mm, 81mm, and 120mm mortars.

The KNU said the bombardments have damaged at least one hospital, two Buddhist monasteries, rubber plantations, and other farmland in the affected areas.

The junta is deliberately targeting civilian populations with both airstrikes and heavy artillery, the KNU claimed, adding that the attacks are ongoing and indiscriminate.

As a result of the escalating assaults, over 8,800 residents from Kyaikto Township have been displaced and are currently seeking refuge in safer areas.

The KNU emphasized the urgent need for humanitarian assistance for the displaced families, many of whom are in critical need of shelter, food, and medical support.
