Elderly Motorbike Taxi Driver Killed in Thanbyuzayat

-

An elderly motorbike taxi driver was found dead with stab wounds in a rubber plantation along the Thanbyuzayat-Ye highway in Mon State’s Thanbyuzayat Township, according to local sources.

The victim, identified as U San Thein, 64, was discovered around 9 a.m. on April 23 by passersby near Sakhangyi village. He had suffered fatal stab wounds, reportedly inflicted during a robbery.

A family member told IMNA that U San Thein had been hired that morning by a couple posing as passengers. They allegedly attacked and killed him to steal his motorcycle.

“My father worked as a motorbike taxi driver. That morning, a man and a woman hired him, then robbed and killed him. I don’t know if they have been caught yet, but since we haven’t heard anything back, I assume not. He died from a knife wound to the neck. His NCX motorbike, mobile phone, and money were all stolen,” the family member said.

The family has filed a report at the Thanbyuzayat police station, but authorities have yet to apprehend any suspects.

A local resident expressed concerns about the growing insecurity in the area, saying, “Hearing about such killings is heartbreaking. With the unstable political situation, crimes like murder, robbery, and theft have become more common. People, especially motorbike taxi drivers who transport strangers day and night, need to be extremely cautious.”

Since the military coup, the breakdown of rule of law has led to a sharp rise in crimes such as robbery, murder, frequent thefts, and armed threats across the region.
