Widespread Use of Starlink Communication System in Payathonsu Town

-

In Payathonsu, a border town between Myanmar and Thailand in Karen State, local sources report a widespread use of Starlink internet WiFi devices amid a shutdown of both Thai and Myanmar phone and internet networks.

Since February 5, electricity, internet, and fuel supplies from Thailand to Payathonsu have been cut off due to ongoing conflict in the area. Although Myanmar’s Atom network initially remained available, residents say all communications have been completely cut off since mid-March.

One resident reported that the local armed group, the Democratic Karen Benevolent Army (DKBA), has been installing Starlink devices for its members and affiliates. Installation costs 5,000 baht, with a monthly fee of 500 baht.

“They’re installing Starlink WiFi devices throughout the town. Installation costs 5,000 baht per unit, and the monthly fee is 500 baht. If you can afford it, you can get it,” the resident explained.

Despite the difficulty of obtaining these devices, they are now being used in offices, homes, restaurants, and even in low-income neighborhoods where access is shared among residents.

Although Thai authorities have frequently seized illegally imported Starlink devices—often linked to gambling and cybercrime—sources say it remains unclear why their use continues to rise in Payathonsu.

However, a DKBA official told the Independent Mon News Agency that the group is unaware of such installations and denied involvement in providing Starlink services.

“You’d have to ask higher authorities to be sure, but from what I know, it’s not easy to purchase a Starlink device. I don’t think we’re the ones organizing it,” the official said.

Locals also allege that DKBA’s business wing is behind the shutdown of Atom, Myanmar’s telecom service provider, in the area.

Due to worsening communication conditions, some residents holding Thai residency cards are reportedly preparing to relocate to Sangkhlaburi, Thailand.

Meanwhile, local armed groups suspect that Chinese nationals still residing in remote areas near Payathonsu may be using Starlink to continue operating their businesses.

Starlink is a satellite internet network developed by the American aerospace company SpaceX to provide global coverage. It is currently authorized for use in more than 54 countries.
