Phone Services in Southern Ye Township Available Only During Daytime

-

Residents in southern Ye Township, Mon State, report that mobile networks are only available during the daytime, with all phone services being cut off at night.

According to locals, mobile services from MPT and Mytel—widely used in the area—have been disrupted every night since December 2024. This nighttime outage has now lasted for nearly four months.

Although mobile networks remain operational during the daytime, the signal is weak, limiting phone calls to areas with fewer people. Internet access is completely unavailable, a local resident confirmed.

A resident from Kyonnye village stated, “At night, there’s no signal at all. It only works during the day, but even then, we can’t use it in the village. We have to go outside the village to get a signal. My house is located on the outskirts, so I still get some reception. In the beginning, we could use the internet, but now it doesn’t work at all.”

The communication blackout has raised concerns among locals, particularly regarding emergencies. Residents worry that the inability to make calls at night could result in delays in responding to health emergencies or conflict-related incidents.

Similarly, in March, mobile networks from Atom and Ooredoo were also reported to be down in Kawzar Township and its surrounding areas.

“At first, we still had phone and internet access, but the signal was very weak. Now, the connection is completely cut off. Ooredoo occasionally works, but the signal is so poor that we can’t use it. Without Mytel, there would be no communication at all,” said a woman from Kawzar.

However, some residents noted that Wi-Fi connections are still available, providing limited access to the internet.

The exact reason for the mobile service disruption remains unclear. However, some locals believe that frequent and prolonged power outages may be a contributing factor.

In 2024, the military junta imposed internet blackouts in at least 81 townships, mainly in areas experiencing heavy conflict and in territories that have fallen out of its control, according to a report by the Myanmar Internet Project.
