TNLA Says Talks with Military Junta Focused Solely on Resolving Military Crisis

-

The Ta’ang National Liberation Army (TNLA) stated that its recent discussions with the military junta were centered exclusively on resolving the ongoing military crisis, according to TNLA spokesperson Lway Yay Oo.

Mr. Deng Xijun, Special Envoy for Asian Affairs of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the People’s Republic of China, representatives of the TNLA and the military junta met in Kunming, China, beginning on February 16.

During the negotiations, the TNLA proposed an immediate ceasefire at the current positions of both forces, halting all military operations—including attacks, drone strikes, mortar shelling, and aerial bombings. Additionally, the TNLA emphasized the need to allow the free movement of civilians, including the transportation of food and medical supplies.

“All I can say for now is that our discussions with the military junta were solely focused on addressing the military crisis. We did not engage in any talks about political issues or territorial boundaries,” TNLA spokesperson Lway Yay Oo told the Independent Mon News Agency.

The TNLA had previously announced in late 2024 that it was prepared to engage in dialogue with the military junta to protect the interests of local civilians.

However, TNLA stated that while it pushed for a ceasefire, the military junta primarily focused on reclaiming lost territory, and the negotiations did not yield any concrete agreements.

Despite the ongoing talks, the military junta launched airstrikes against TNLA-held areas. Bombings continued even after the negotiations concluded.

While the first round of discussions failed to produce a breakthrough, TNLA confirmed plans for a second round of negotiations, which is expected to take place in April.
