Battle at Anan Kwin Pauses After Military Suffers Heavy Casualties

-

According to statements from resistance groups active in the area, the intense battles that erupted over the New Year period between the military junta forces and resistance groups near the military’s strategic Anan Kwin base in Kyainseikgyi Township, Karen State, have calmed,  for now.

Clashes occurred from December 30th to January 2nd along the Thanbyuzayat-Three Pagodas Pass road as military junta troops attempted to deliver reinforcements and evacuate injured personnel. The KNLA (Karen National Liberation Army), SOF (Special Operations Force), and allied drone units engaged the convoy, resulting in the deaths of over 40 military personnel and the capture of more than 30 weapons.

Resistance forces also suffered losses, with one fighter killed and five others injured. Observers noted that both sides have currently paused ground operations in the Anan Kwin area.

A local observer monitoring the conflict explained, “The latest developments show that resistance forces led by the KNLA still control several areas around the village and its vicinity. The military junta, however, continues the attempt to send reinforcements from Thanbyuzayat and the Mudon border whenever possible. For now, both sides appear to be in a state of readiness, with ground operations temporarily halted.”

Even though ground troops have retreated, the military junta is reportedly maintaining daily aerial surveillance and using drones and aircraft.

The strategic Anan Kwin post is considered a critical military stronghold for the military council in the Mon-Karen border region, which has been under siege by resistance forces since June 2024.

A representative of SOF stated that the KNLA is pursuing a patience strategy to capture the Anan Kwin base while minimizing losses.

“This Anan Kwin base is the largest and only remaining significant stronghold for the military council in the region. KNLA and PDF (People’s Defense Force) units have already taken control of many other bases. This one, however, will take some time. Following the KNLA’s lead, we will carefully seize this base while minimizing harm,” said SOF leader, Comrade Ko Aung San Shar.

The clashes have displaced entire villages, including Anan Kwin, Lut Shan, and Tanyin. For the past six months, displaced civilians, including women, children, and the elderly, have been in urgent need of food and medical assistance.

Displaced individuals living near conflict zones are also struggling with livelihood challenges.

Many are engaging in small-scale farming while facing the constant danger of landmine explosions, according to humanitarian workers assisting the affected communities.

The battle for Anan Kwin began in mid-August 2024, with intense fighting concentrated near the Ye -Thanbyuzayat road, east of Ye Tha Khun village. Reports indicate that landmine explosions in the area have, to date, injured at least eight people.
