After a period of relative calm following the clashes along the Ye-Thanbyuzayat road in October, fighting resumed on the morning of December 17 near Kongpawywarthit Village, close to Mawtkanin. Local residents are being urged to exercise caution while traveling in the area.
At around 5 a.m. on December 17, reports indicated that fighting broke out near Kongpawywarthit Village, which is located in the northern part of Ye Township’s Mawkanin village area. The sounds of both heavy and small arms fire have been continuous, according to local sources.
A resident from Kongpawywarthit Village stated, “The fighting continues near Kongpawywarthit Village in the Mawkanin area. We can hear both heavy and small weapons being fired non-stop from early morning until now. Local residents are advised to travel cautiously on the main road and wait until the situation calms down before moving.”
The region around Kongpawywarthit Village, within the Mawkanin village tract, remains active with troop movements from both the military junta and resistance forces amid ongoing clashes.
“This area is currently seeing movements from various military groups, including the New Mon State Party – AD, Karen National Liberation Army, People’s Security Forces, and others. We are still unclear about the details of the latest clash,” the resident added.
Since October, the military junta has stationed forces along the Ye-Thanbyuzayat Road, prompting heightened alert from resistance groups, who remain on standby for potential attacks and confrontations.
Given that the area serves as a base for both resistance forces and military junta troops, the resistance forces frequently take advantage of opportunities to target military positions when possible.
