A commemorative event marking the 150th anniversary of the iconic ‘Thanbyuzayat’ construction will be held from December 27 to 30 at Thanbyuzayat town’s Central Park, according to local sources.
The settlement of Thanbyuzayat began with the construction of a zayat (rest house) in 1874. A small village gradually formed around this zayat, eventually developing into the present-day Thanbyuzayat town, which is now celebrating its 150th anniversary.
“The town’s seasonal festivals are usually held in December, and this year will be no exception. The main events will include sports competitions. It’s not a grand celebration—given the current circumstances, it will be similar to previous years,” said a local resident.
In honor of the 150th anniversary of Thanbyuzayat, residents will collectively organize activities such as offering alms to 150 monks, donating provisions, erecting a commemorative stone inscription, and publishing a magazine and calendar. Sports events, entertainment programs, and literary contests will also be held, according to reports.
Due to ongoing military conflicts in the district, including in Thanbyuzayat, locals have expressed concerns about security, fearing potential risks during the anniversary celebrations.
“The history of bomb explosions during the 100th anniversary celebrations in 1974 is still fresh in people’s memories. Given the current situation, I’m concerned something similar could happen during this commemorative event as well,” said an event organizer.
Thanbyuzayat (originally known as Thupmoe Zayat [Zinc Roof Rest House]) was constructed in 1874 for public use. The town was named Thanbyuzayat after this zayat. In June 1964, it was officially recognized as a town, upgrading its status from a village under national guidelines.
The 100th anniversary of the town was celebrated in 1974. According to reports from attendees, a bomb explosion occurred during the celebrations.
