Residents Displaced from Thanbyuzayat-Payathonzu Route Unable to Return Home Amid Ongoing Conflict

-

Heavy fighting continues along the Thanbyuzayat-Payathonzu road, connecting Mon and Karen States, preventing displaced residents from returning to their villages, according to local sources.

Fierce clashes between joint revolutionary forces and the Military Junta have kept residents from several villages, including Ye Dankhun, Zee Nge Phin, U Kwe + Daw Yain, away from their homes. On November 8, the Military Junta ordered complete evacuations from these villages.

Displacement along the Thanbyuzayat-Payathonzu road began as early as August when the Karen National Liberation Army (KNLA), People’s Defense Force (PDF), and allied groups launched an offensive against the junta’s Annankwin strategic base near Mawlamyine. The conflict has since escalated, with both sides intensifying attacks.

According to a local , the Military Junta has been responding with mortar shells, airstrikes, and drones, cutting off phone and internet services. Additional reinforcements from the Military Junta’s units stationed in Ye have been sent through the Ye-Thanbyuzayat road since November 4.

The Thanbyuzayat-Payathonzu road, a key trade route on the Thai-Myanmar border, remains heavily contested. Following the recent capture of the 284th Infantry and Lutsan Mon base by joint Karen forces, efforts to seize the Annankwin base have intensified.

Over 4,000 people from Annankwin and nearby villages have been displaced for three months due to continued violence, according to the Human Rights Foundation of Monland (HURFOM)’s latest monthly report.
