On November 5 at around 7 p.m., a mortar shell exploded in Theinzayat town, Kyaikto Township, Mon State, killing an elderly woman and injuring a young girl, according to local residents.
The mortar reportedly struck a house in Mya Yatana ward. Theinzayat town.
Daw Khin Myit, a 70-year-old woman who was at the residence, died at the scene due to head trauma and shrapnel injuries to her abdomen, according to a local.
Her 15-year-old granddaughter, Ma Lae Lae San, who was also present, sustained non-life-threatening injuries to her hand and leg from shrapnel and is currently receiving treatment at the Theinzayat Township Hospital.
While military junta supporters Telegram channels claim the mortar was fired by KNU/PDF forces, residents assert that the projectile was fired by the military junta’s troops.
Locals allege that junta forces stationed in Theinzayat continue to target residential areas with mortar fire intentionally, even when no clashes are occurring. This follows an incident in July when a mortar launched by the junta’s 310th Artillery Battalion exploded in a Theinzayat neighborhood, killing one man and injuring four others.
