Retail Sales of Traditional Mon Attire Resurge

-

With the return of donation events, pagoda festivals, and commemorative ceremonies during the open season, retail sales of colorful traditional Mon attire have surged again, according to local producers and sellers.

While traditional Mon outfits are typically sold online year-round, sellers have noticed an increase in group purchases by Mon locals during this festive period.

“Sales have doubled compared to the rainy season. We always sell, but during this time, the increase in festival events drives sales higher. I barely have time for a meal,” said one seller from Mawlamyine. “People come in groups to buy clothes, especially for religious ceremonies like Kathina.”

Due to high demand, women’s handwoven, machine-made, ceremonial, and silk outfits are frequently out of stock, according to sellers. However, sales remain volatile, as they depend heavily on whether festivals and ceremonies are permitted given the political situation, explained a seller from Thanbyuzayat.

“Sales fluctuate based on whether events can be held. Sometimes we sell well, but other times it’s quiet. Online sales remain steady, though,” the seller added.

Local vendors are still reliant on online sales platforms for consistent revenue. Profits from international sales have been affected by rising shipping costs and travel restrictions due to ongoing conflicts, they said.

The popularity of Mon traditional attire has also grown beyond the Mon community, with other ethnic groups purchasing the garments, further boosting sales. These outfits are sold not only within Myanmar but also in countries like Thailand, Malaysia, the U.S., Japan, and Singapore.

Historically, Mon people wore white and red attire during religious ceremonies, commemorative events, and on significant cultural days. As time has passed, the designs have evolved to include a variety of colors and styles, while maintaining the traditional essence. Prices for these outfits range from 15,000 to 1,000,000 kyats, depending on the material and design.
