The Dawei Defense Team (DDT) announced that it will take effective action against those who assist in collecting population censuses in Dawei Township, Tanintharyi Region.
On September 27, DDT declared that it would use various means to oppose the sham election staged by the military council and take strong measures against those who participated in it.
“We will impose punishments that do not endanger lives. The first step will be a warning through a phone call or letter. If they do not stop, we will take more harsh action,” stated Galon Min Latt, the DDT’s Information and Communications Officer.
The DDT has already obtained a list of census takers and is investigating those behind this process.
A resident of Dawei mentioned, “Security has been tightened in some areas of the town, with increased personnel at some entry checkpoints. Drones are being deployed over the town both day and night. The main goal seems to be preventing resistance forces from operating while the census is conducted.”
The military council launched the nationwide population census on October 1, 2024.
According to local sources, the census-taking process is conducted mainly in urban areas on census-taking days, with the team receiving protection from the military, police, and People’s Militia.
The military council claims the census is conducted to ensure accurate voter lists for the upcoming election.
