The elections organized by Myanmar’s military junta are likely to be restricted to urban areas and zones where the military can maintain security, according to revolutionary forces and election observers.

Within Mon State, key regions such as Ye Township, Belin, Kyaikto, and Thaton, known for strong revolutionary activity, are expected to face significant challenges in hosting the elections. In areas with weaker revolutionary presence, the junta has reportedly been pressuring local residents to participate in a population census and security measures related to the election process, said Nai Naga, spokesperson for the Mon State Revolutionary Forces.
The military junta, facing resistance across much of the country, is expected to hold elections primarily in regions where they can ensure control and security, aiming to demonstrate their authority both domestically and internationally. Dr. San Aung, Executive Director of the News Myanmar Foundation, warned that Mawlamyine could be used as a showcase city to project the success of the elections.
Despite the junta’s plans, revolutionary groups have pledged to strongly oppose the elections and disrupt the process wherever possible.
