MJC Pledges Full Support for Burmese Journalists Facing Rights Violations and Injustices

-

The Myanmar Journalists Club (MJC), an organization formed by journalists from both domestic and international communities, has pledged its unwavering support for Burmese journalists who have been subjected to rights violations and injustices during the military coup.

According to a statement released on social media, the MJC was established on August 17 with the aim of standing in solidarity with journalists who have suffered physical and mental harm due to the military’s actions. The club is also committed to promoting a free and fair media landscape.

A spokesperson from the MJC’s communications committee emphasized that, particularly during these challenging times, the organization is dedicated to protecting the rights of female journalists and preventing media outlets from engaging in rights abuses.

Since the military coup, the majority of media outlets across the country have been shut down, and many journalists have been arrested and imprisoned. As a result, numerous media organizations, including ethnic media outlets, have relocated abroad.

In this context, journalists are being unjustly dismissed, oppressed, and denied their full rights. An independent female journalist working on the frontlines noted these ongoing challenges.

In response to these injustices, the MJC is inviting new members to join its ranks in finding collective solutions. The organization currently comprises around 70 members, including independent and freelance journalists as well as ethnic media journalists, and is actively recruiting more members.

Furthermore, the MJC has stated that it will remain independent and will not seek financial support from any donor organizations.
