Seven political prisoners who were recently transferred to Daik-U Prison in Bago Region from Kyaikmaraw and Insein Prisons have reportedly been subjected to severe beatings by prison authorities. The incident has raised serious concerns about their safety and well-being.
According to U Thaik Htun Oo, a leading committee member of the Political Prisoners Network-Myanmar (PPNM), the seven prisoners, including three from Kyaikmaraw, two from Insein, and two from Daik-U itself, were illegally assaulted by prison officials, particularly by San Nwe Oo, a female officer, and Thazin Myint, a male officer.
Among the victims, one woman who was receiving medical treatment for a stomach condition was also reportedly beaten, exacerbating her condition. Some of the prisoners sustained serious injuries, although none were reported to be in critical condition. “They primarily targeted these seven or eight prisoners. Others were hit with batons and sustained injuries as well,” said U Thaik Htun Oo.
The situation escalated when female political prisoners attempted to protect the detainee, leading to more widespread beatings. The PPNM reported that the seven injured prisoners are now in a precarious state, with concerns for their lives and security.
Additionally, it has been reported that the transferred prisoners from Kyaikmaraw and Insein Prisons are being extorted for up to 100,000 kyats. Those unable to pay are allegedly subjected to illegal interrogation and further beatings, according to a PPNM statement released on August 15.
