The military junta has launched an intensified offensive in Ye Township, Mon State, deploying new troops along the Ye-Dawei highway in an effort to regain control, according to local resistance groups and residents.
In early July, approximately 400 junta soldiers entered the southern Ye region by river, dividing into four battalions. The operation involved various military units, including the 19th Operations Command Headquarters, the 317th Artillery Regiment, the 106th Infantry Battalion, and the 588th Light Infantry Battalion, totaling around 600 troops in the area.
In a similar move, around 200 junta soldiers entered the northern part of Ye Township, also divided into two battalions.
“The junta has increased its forces in the Mon, Karen, and Tanintharyi regions, integrating new soldiers from military training into their ranks. They’ve been particularly active along the Ye-Dawei road, especially from Thanbyuzayat to Yebyu. Given the intensified fighting in the north, they may need to redeploy some troops,” said Nai Naga, a spokesperson for the Mon State Revolutionary Force (MSRF).
Since March, the Joint Revolutionary Forces have maintained control over the Thanbyuzayat-Ye-Dawei road, where skirmishes have occurred almost daily. In late July alone, at least ten clashes were reported between junta forces and local resistance groups.
A local resident said, “The military has set up roadblocks and conducts frequent checks along the route from Mawkanin to Thanbyuzayat. The PDFs (People’s Defense Forces) are holding their ground. With the Thanbyuzayat-Ye-Dawei road under their control, the junta has been forced to use alternative routes for supplies.”
The junta has also armed local militias in the Ahryutaung area to participate in military operations. According to military sources, the junta has altered its strategy, expanding its presence along highland areas from Dawei to Ye, reinforcing security at these key locations.
Resistance forces have pledged to continue holding the Thanbyuzayat-Ye-Dawei road and have warned of potential increased fighting in the area. The resistance groups have issued warnings for civilians to be cautious when traveling in the township due to the risk of sudden clashes.
