Flooding in Tanintharyi Township, Tanintharyi Region, has resulted in the deaths of at least seven people, according to the local social relief team.
Confirmed reports indicate that seven men drowned due to the flooding in the town of Tanintharyi. The deceased include residents from various neighborhoods within the town.
“The current number of confirmed deaths is seven, but the actual number could be higher. There have been incidents of boats capsizing both upstream and downstream of the Tanintharyi River. The strong currents make it difficult to determine the exact number of victims,” said a member of the local social relief team.
Residents of Pyiaye and Aukkin villages in Tanintharyi Township were also among the fatalities, with homes being swept away by the floods, according to local sources.
“This flood was unusual. Unlike previous floods, where the water rose gradually, this time it surged rapidly. The current was also very strong, causing significant damage to homes,” a resident told the Independent Mon News Agency.
During the last week of July, the rising waters of the Tanintharyi River caused widespread flooding in Tanintharyi town and surrounding villages, affecting over 700 homes.
As of early August, water levels in the Tanintharyi River have receded, and most of the affected neighborhoods and villages have seen the floodwaters subside, though some low-lying areas remain inundated.
