Security Concerns Worsen for Travelers on Ye-Thanbyuzayat Road

-

The security situation for passengers traveling on the Ye-Thanbyuzayat Road in Mon State has worsened due to nearly daily intense clashes between the Revolutionary Joint Forces and the military junta, according to travelers.

On July 29, at 8 a.m., a battle broke out in Aung Thayar Village between the military junta, the New Mon State Party (NMSP), and the Revolutionary Joint Forces, causing passenger vehicles to temporarily halt.

Due to these frequent clashes, the military junta has been conducting extensive searches of motorcycles, passenger vehicles, and travelers’ belongings, including mobile phones. They have also been detaining suspicious individuals, according to a local resident from Ye.

“In the past couple of days, there have been two clashes. The interrogations have become more severe, especially for farmers. The military suspects them of supplying the opposition groups. Although travel is still possible, the thorough phone searches make it increasingly difficult,” said the resident.

Currently, locals are taking alternative routes and paying double the usual fares to avoid the conflict zones. A local woman said, “My sister was sick and needed to go to the Mawlamyine clinic. When we reached Mawkaninn, there was heavy fighting, so the driver turned back home.”

The military junta is reportedly increasing their presence along the Ye-Dawei Road, aiming to regain control. Consequently, residents are concerned about their ability to travel to other towns.

In July alone, there have been at least five clashes near Mawkaninn Village between the NMSP, the Revolutionary Joint Forces, and the military junta. On July 29, following a clash, two local drivers from Ye were detained by the military junta and have not been released.

Due to the escalating conflict, the Revolutionary Joint Forces have advised residents to avoid travel unless absolutely necessary.
