Communication with several residents of Maung Mae Shaung village in Dawei Township, Tanintharyi Region, has been lost after their arrest by military junta troops, according to family members and local sources.
On July 24, the military entered and occupied the village, arresting at least four locals.
“They suddenly arrived and set up camp in the village. Some men were arrested and they haven’t been released yet. We don’t know if they’re alive or dead,” said a member of the local People’s Defense Force.
The military junta troops are reportedly from Artillery Battalion 302, based in Zaha village in southern Maung Mae Shaung.
While the military junta troops entered the village, the approximately 70-strong military unit allegedly set fire to at least ten homes, as reported by local sources.
There have been reports of civilians being shot by the military junta, but these have not yet been independently confirmed.
Although there is currently no fighting in Maung Mae Shaung village, small arms fire can be heard according to the locals.
