KHRG Reports Increased Civilian Abuses in Southeastern Myanmar

-

The Karen Human Rights Group (KHRG) has reported a rise in incidents of torture and abuse by armed forces against civilians in southeastern Myanmar, coinciding with International Day in Support of Victims of Torture on June 26.

In their recent report, KHRG documented 33 cases of physical and psychological violence and 13 instances of forced labor and exploitation in 2023, impacting over 140 local residents.

KHRG spokesperson Saw Nandar Soo attributed the increase in torture and abuse to allegations of civilian support for revolutionary forces, leading to detentions and mistreatment by the military junta.

“Why have the instances of torture increased? It’s a military strategy employed by the junta. When the military conducts ground operations or occupies front lines, many civilians are detained on suspicion of supporting revolutionary groups,” said Saw Nandar Soo.

The report also highlighted that the military junta forces civilians to carry heavy loads, uses them as human shields in conflict zones or mine-laden areas, and subjects them to verbal and physical violence during unlawful detentions.

The majority of torture victims are men, particularly those living in villages near military camps.

Saw Nandar Soo emphasized the lack of adequate support for victims of torture, stating, “Many victims have to manage their medical treatments by themselves, and family members often come together to help them recover.”

Local civil society organizations (CSOs/CBOs) are crucial in providing psychological, legal, and financial support to victims and their families. KHRG urges the expansion of these support programs to aid survivors.
