The military junta is seizing Thai goods entering Mawlamyine, Mon State, causing a halt in the entry of Thai goods into the township in recent days.
“Both trucks coming from Three Pagodas Pass and those from Myawaddy are being intercepted by the military junta. Around nine trucks coming from Three Pagodas Pass were seized by the military near the Sabei Gu Bridge and handed over to customs,” said a source close to local authorities.
Due to these military seizures, trucks carrying Thai goods are forced to stop before reaching Sabei Gu Bridge and Zartapyin.
“Before reaching Sabei Gu Bridge and Zartapyin, hundreds of trucks are waiting to enter Mawlamyine,” said a trader.
A trader transporting goods from Myawaddy to Mawlamyine stated, “The road from Myawaddy is rough, taking about three nights to travel. Now, due to the military’s seizures, we have to stop and wait before reaching Zartapyin.”
The interruption in the entry of Thai goods into Mawlamyine has led to a shortage of Thai products in the region.
Currently, trade at the Three Pagodas Pass border is halted from the Myanmar side, while entry points from Thailand are also closed. Over 100 trucks are lined up waiting at the Thai border near Sangkhla Buri, according to locals.
The Three Pagodas Pass border gate was closed by Myanmar on June 17, and locals are waiting to see if it will reopen on the coming Saturday.
“We are waiting for Myanmar’s announcement on Saturday about whether the gate will reopen. There are hundreds of trucks waiting,” said one local.
Currently, trucks are lined up along the road near the Three Pagodas Pass border gate, waiting for the situation to be resolved.
