According to the health workers, a rise in dengue fever cases among children in most townships of Mon State starting in early June.
While the number of dengue cases was low in May, it has significantly increased in June, predominantly affecting children under 15 years old, according to a health worker.
“In Chaungzon Township, there are about 20 to 30 cases of dengue each day, all of which are among children. Due to their weaker immune systems, the incidence is high. It’s almost like every child is getting it,” the worker said.
In Chaungzon Township, the average number of daily cases is around 25, and in Kyaikto Township, there have been up to 60 cases of dengue fever among children.
Although there have been no reported deaths due to dengue fever in Mon State so far, health officials emphasize that the situation requires special attention.
At the same time, with both dengue fever and COVID-19 occurring simultaneously, a general practitioner in Mawlamyine advised that anyone experiencing unusual symptoms should visit hospitals or clinics for accurate diagnosis.
“COVID-19 is present but not in large numbers. Only testing can confirm if it’s COVID-19. Many patients recover quickly from either dengue or COVID-19. The symptoms of dengue and COVID-19 are quite similar; the main difference is that COVID-19 causes a drop in oxygen levels and loss of smell,” the doctor explained.
To prevent the spread of dengue fever, health departments are conducting weekly mosquito control measures, but local residents indicate that house-to-house spraying and medication distribution efforts are insufficient.
According to records from the Military Junta’s Department of Health, there were 1,175 reported cases of dengue fever from January to July 2023, with the highest incidence in Mawlamyine, Paung, and Kyaikmaraw Townships.
