A tragic incident in Kyaikto Township, Mon State, has resulted in the death of a 14-year-old girl and injuries to another young girl following artillery fire from the military junta. The shelling occurred at a quarry located between Ahkaing and Thonekhwa villages near Theinzayat town.
The incident took place around 1 PM on June 14, when artillery units from Battalion 310 and rapid response units from Battalion 207, stationed in Theinzayat, fired over 10 shells without any apparent provocation.
One of the shells landed in the yard of U Soe Min Aung in Kyaukhat Quarry. The explosion killed his 14-year-old daughter, Ma Nandar Lin, and injured his A year and a half year-old daughter, Ma Shwe Zin Lin.
“The elder daughter of U Soe Min Aung died instantly, while the younger daughter is now receiving treatment at Theinzayat Township Hospital,” said a local resident.
Frequent shelling by military junta units based in Theinzayat has forced approximately 3,000 residents to flee from villages such as Ahkaing, Sekkwin, and Thonekhwa villages.
On June 13, two residents of Pannaekone village were also injured by artillery fire from Battalion 310.
In May alone, shelling by military units in Mon State resulted in the deaths of 13 people and injuries to 41 others, according to data from the Lagon Eain Bulletin.
